What to Expect at Your First Laser Treatment — A Beginner's Guide from Newhall Laser Treatments

Thinking about booking your first laser treatment — but not quite sure what happens when you walk through the door? You're not alone. It's completely normal to feel a little nervous about something new, especially when it involves a word like "laser". But here's what we want you to know before anything else: thousands of people have sat in exactly the same chair you're about to, and the vast majority leave wondering why they waited so long.

This guide is for you — the first-timer. We're going to walk you through everything, step by step, so you arrive feeling informed, calm, and ready.

First Things First — What Even Is a Laser Treatment?

"Laser treatment" is actually an umbrella term for a whole family of procedures that use focused light energy to target specific concerns in the skin — whether that's unwanted hair, pigmentation, redness, thread veins, acne scarring, or tattoos.

The laser delivers precisely controlled energy to a target area — a hair follicle, a pigment deposit, a blood vessel — without damaging the surrounding skin. Different wavelengths of light target different things, which is why different lasers are used for different treatments.

At Newhall Laser Treatments, we use industry-leading Ellipse and Candela laser technology — including the Gentle Pro Series, widely regarded as the gold standard for laser treatments across all skin types. These are professional-grade systems chosen for their safety record, effectiveness, and the comfort they offer clients during treatment.

In short: this is not a beauty gimmick. It's a clinically proven technology used by specialists around the world — and it's very well understood.

Before Your Appointment — What to Do

A little preparation goes a long way in making sure your treatment is as safe and effective as possible. Here's what we typically advise for first-timers:

Avoid sun exposure in the days leading up to your appointment. Tanned or sunburned skin is more sensitive, and laser treatments work best — and most safely — on untanned skin. If you've been away or spent time outdoors, let your skin settle for a couple of weeks first.

Don't use fake tan for at least two weeks before your session. Artificial colour in the skin can interfere with how the laser targets its intended area.

For laser hair removal: avoid waxing, threading, or epilating for at least four weeks before your session — these methods remove the hair root that the laser needs to target. Shaving is fine, and is usually recommended a day or two before your appointment.

For skin treatments: arrive with clean skin, free of heavy makeup, SPF, or skincare products. We'll prep the area before we begin, but a fresh canvas helps.

Stay hydrated and arrive relaxed. We know that's easier said than done, but well-hydrated skin responds better to treatment — and a calm nervous system makes the whole experience more comfortable.

If you're ever unsure about preparation for your specific treatment, just ask us before your appointment. We'd rather answer ten questions in advance than have you arrive uncertain.

When You Arrive — The Consultation

Your first visit always begins with a consultation. This is not a formality — it's one of the most important parts of the process, and it's there entirely for your benefit.

Your specialist will:

  • Take a full skin and health history to ensure the treatment is safe and appropriate for you

  • Assess your skin type, tone, and the area being treated

  • Discuss your goals and what you're hoping to achieve

  • Explain exactly what will happen during the session

  • Answer every question you have — no matter how small it feels

This is your opportunity to be completely honest about your concerns, your medical history, any medications you're taking, and anything else that feels relevant. The more we know, the better we can tailor the treatment to you.

Nothing happens until you feel fully informed and comfortable. You are always in control.

During the Treatment — What It Actually Feels Like

This is usually what people are most curious — and most anxious — about. So let's be honest about it.

It is not painful in the way most people fear. The most common descriptions from clients are a warm snapping sensation, a mild flick, or a feeling of heat on the skin. Many describe it as surprisingly manageable. Some areas of the body are more sensitive than others — bony areas or places with thinner skin tend to feel more noticeable — but the sensation is brief and passes quickly with each pulse.

To help with comfort, our Candela laser system includes a built-in Dynamic Cooling Device (DCD™) — a burst of cooling mist that is delivered to the skin a fraction of a second before each laser pulse. This significantly reduces discomfort and makes the experience far more tolerable than most first-timers expect.

For treatments like microneedling or certain facials, a topical numbing cream is applied before we begin, giving it plenty of time to take effect so you're comfortable throughout.

During the session, you'll be asked to wear protective eyewear — this is standard safety practice and nothing to be concerned about. Your specialist will work methodically across the treatment area, checking in with you as they go.

Most sessions take between 20 minutes and an hour, depending on the treatment and the area covered.

After Your Treatment — The Immediate Aftermath

Once your session is complete, here's what you can typically expect in the hours and days that follow:

Some redness and warmth in the treated area is completely normal — think of it like a mild flush or the feeling of light sunburn. This usually settles within a few hours, though for some treatments it may last 24 to 48 hours.

Slight sensitivity is also expected. The skin has just received a carefully controlled stimulus, and it's doing exactly what it should — responding and beginning to repair.

What to avoid in the immediate days after treatment:

  • Direct sun exposure — protect the area with SPF if going outside

  • Hot baths, saunas, or steam rooms for 24–48 hours

  • Harsh skincare products, exfoliants, or anything with active ingredients unless advised otherwise

  • Picking, scratching, or rubbing the treated area

We'll give you full, personalised aftercare guidance at your appointment — and you can also find our aftercare advice on our website at any time.

When Will You See Results?

This is one of the most important things to understand as a first-timer: laser treatments are not always instant — and that's actually a sign that they're working properly.

Many laser treatments work by stimulating your skin's own biological processes. Collagen production, cellular renewal, the gradual breakdown of pigmentation — these things take time. For most treatments, results build progressively over days and weeks following each session, with the full benefit often seen after a course of treatments rather than a single visit.

That said, many clients do notice something after their very first session — a brightness, a smoothness, a reduction in redness. It varies by treatment and by person, and your specialist will give you a realistic timeline during your consultation so you know exactly what to expect and when.

The short version: trust the process. The results are worth it.

How Many Sessions Will You Need?

Again, this varies — and we'll always be upfront about this from the start.

As a general guide:

Treatment

Typical Course

Laser Hair Removal

6–8 sessions, 4–8 weeks apart

Pigmentation / Rejuvenation

3–6 sessions, 4–6 weeks apart

Rosacea & Redness

3–5 sessions, 4–6 weeks apart

Acne & Acne Scarring

4–6 sessions, 3–4 weeks apart

Tattoo Removal

6–12+ sessions, 6–8 weeks apart

Thread Veins

1–3 sessions, 4–6 weeks apart

Microneedling

3–6 sessions, 4–6 weeks apart

These are guidelines, not guarantees — every skin is different, and your specialist will give you a more personalised assessment after your consultation.

Common Questions We Hear from First-Timers

"Is it safe for my skin tone?" Yes. Our Gentle Pro Series laser platform is specifically designed to treat all Fitzpatrick skin types safely and effectively — including darker skin tones that some older laser systems weren't suited to. We assess your skin type as part of every consultation.

"Will it leave marks or scars?" When performed by a trained specialist using professional equipment, laser treatment is very safe and the risk of lasting marks is extremely low. Your specialist will always test a small area first if there is any uncertainty.

"Can I wear makeup afterwards?" For facial treatments, we usually recommend avoiding full makeup for 24 hours to let the skin breathe and recover. We'll advise you specifically based on your treatment.

"What if I find it too uncomfortable?" Tell us. Seriously — your comfort matters, and we can adjust settings, take a break, or apply additional cooling. You are never just expected to push through. Communication during your session makes the experience better for everyone.

"Do I need a patch test?" For many laser treatments, yes — and we'll organise this as part of your initial appointment. A patch test simply means we treat a very small area first to check your skin's response before proceeding with a full session. It's quick, easy, and gives us important information.
